Grant Park is the largest historic district in the city. It is also the oldest, and fourth largest, city park in Atlanta. The neighborhood and park get their name from L.P. Grant, a civil engineer who is considered the “Father of Atlanta”. Restoration efforts beginning in the 1970’s led to Grant Park becoming a hot neighborhood for anyone looking to live in the city.

History
After the civil war, LP Grant began trading and gifting much of his land to the city of Atlanta, leading to the creation of Oakland Cemetery and the naming of Grant Park. Not long after that, a failed circus in the area left a lot of animals without homes, leading to the creation of the Atlanta Zoo. The mass production of automobiles and the construction of 1-20 hindered the growth of the city during the mid-1900s, but in the last 20 years the city has experienced a period of significant growth.

What’s Unique About the Area
Another reason to live in Grant Park is because of its proximity to the BeltLine. The neighborhood is also home to the Atlanta Zoo and Cyclorama, a panoramic painting highlighting the battle of Atlanta during the Civil War. Grant Park is bordered by Cabbagetown on the north, Ormewood Park on the east, Boulevard Heights on the southeast, Chosewood Park on the south, and Summerhill and Peoplestown on the west.

Architecture
Along with nearby Inman Park, Grant Park has the largest remaining area of Victorian Architecture in Atlanta. Much of Grant Park’s residences were built between the 1882 birth of the neighborhood and the early 20th century so you will find the of charm of older homes. Multi-story mansions face the park, more modest, modified Queen Anne houses were built on surrounding streets, and one-story Victorian era cottages and Craftsman bungalows were built to the east of the park.
