On the east side of Atlanta, about 5 miles from downtown lies the historic community of Kirkwood. It’s a unique and varied town with a active downtown area, 5 parks, and homes of various sizes and styles. The area is trendy, but has a homey quality that gives it a down-to-earth feel than some similar upscale communities.

History
Kirkwood is another of the early streetcar suburbs of Atlanta. Its name likely derives from the Kirkpatrick and Dunwoody families, which owned much of the land prior to the Civil War. The Battle of Atlanta, which is highlighted in Grant Parks Cyclorama, took place partially in what is now Kirkwood, and there are 5 historical markers in the city. Kirkwood, through the years, has experienced drastic socio-economic changes, and exists today as a diverse and culturally rich part of Atlanta.
What’s Unique About the Area
Kirkwood has an easily identifiable downtown area, which the residents call, “the small town in the big city.” On top of the downtown area, Kirkwood is also home to 5 beautiful parks: Gilliam Park, Coan Park, Bessie Branham Park, Oakview Parks, and Dekalb Memorial Parks. They are also attempting to establish the Eastside Greenway; a series of linear parks, green space and urban trail networks that span across the city.
Architecture
One of the great things about Kirkwood is its diversity. Part of this can be linked to the variety of homes in the area. You’ll find plenty of modern homes, historical Victorian homes, or bungalows on your average Kirkwood residential street. The Craftsman Bungalow is prominent thanks to growth in the area during the 1920’s when the style of architecture was popular. In addition to the many historic style homes, Kirkwood boasts a great capacity for new homes that meet the needs of modern living while maintaining the traditional fabric of the surrounding community.
