Druid Hills

This progressive community on the eastern side of Atlanta thrives on being the home to one of Atlanta’s top universities: Emory. Often just referred to as Emory, Druid Hills is quite a beautiful community. It has many smaller communities within it, including Toco Hills, Lavista Park, Sagamore Hills, and Briarcliff. It is also home to the Center for Disease Control.

History

Druid Hills was a planned community developed by leading Atlanta families during the turn of the century, including Coke magnate Asa Candler. The city was designed by Fredrick Olmstead, widely considered the father of American Landscape Architecture, which is why it has a string of parks along Ponce De Leon avenue.

What’s Unique About the Area

One advantage to having a major university and government program in your city is it draws a variety of people and cultures to your front door. Due to this, Druid Hills has a variety of worldly cuisines to choose from. It’s string of parks also makes it a unique, and highly sought after, part of Atlanta. It’s also interesting to note that the Atlanta-city section of Druid Hills is one of Atlanta’s most affluent neighborhoods with a median household income in excess of $238,500. Druid Hills is bounded to the west by Morningside and Virginia Highland and to the south by Candler Park.

Architecture

When looking for a place to live, Druid Hills has plenty of variety. You can find condos, single family homes, and plenty of upscale choices in certain areas. Because it’s home to Emory, you’ll also find plenty of apartments and more affordable housing options designed with the smaller budget in mind. Historic homes are also in abundance, and offer a lot of charm for the upscale home buyer.
